Review Text

This is an introductory work to Scripture, and specifically to the Tanak (Old Testament). It differs radically, however, from most such works for several reasons. First, the author is not concerned with doctrinal, moral, or historical questions, but solely with the Bible as literature; he therefore aims at a purely literary appraisal. Second, he is critical, in every sense of the word - with emphasis on iconoclastic commentary. Some parts of the OT are "tedious and pedestrian"; some are "abhorrent" (Nahum); and some of the psalms, contrary to what we have always been told, are exceptionally bad poetry. But, for all of that, Sandmel concludes, "whatever else the Hebrews were, they were pre-eminently a race of extraordinarily gifted writers." A happily irreverent approach to the aesthetic value of the Bible, refreshing in style and approach. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
