Excerpt: ...subjects, or birds and insects in medallions, on a shagreen or blue salmon-scale ground, in rare cases with ornamentally perforated neck, elaborately modelled handles, or wreaths of flowers in relief. One vase of the hexagonal shape deserves special mention. Four of the sides painted with landscapes in colours, the other two in blue monochrome. It was sold at Sotheby's for. 305 (William Edkins' sale 21st to 23rd April, 1874). The flower plaques show the high degree of sharp and minute modelling of which the Bristol hard paste was capable. The details of the floral decorations in relief are executed with marvellous skill, and the wreaths most artistically arranged. The production of these flower pieces could never have been undertaken for profit, the actual trade cost being more than 5 each. Some of them have armorial bearings in the centre, and it is probable they were complimentary gifts to personal friends. Some are oval, some circular. Theso botanic wreaths, in which every blossom could be recognisod, were likewise employed for thd decoration of Bristol vases. One of those flower plaques of the largest size known, with a fm. 44. Bristol Flower Plaque: Arms Of France.--(Edkins Collection.) medallion portrait of Benjamin Franklin in the centre, surrounded by a wreath of raised loaves of matted gold and an outside border of flowers most exquisitely modelled in bisouit, fetched X150 at the Edkins solo. Fif. it will give a good idea of tho general effect produced in these flower plaquoa. The orown, wreath, and border are thiokly gilt with matted jold, wrought in detail with the burnisher.
