The competition over energy resources, and notably coal, exacerbated controversies over territorial divisions within Europe in the first half of the twentieth century. This work examines how France addressed its rivalry with Germany in the years following the two World Wars, first using force in the Ruhr valley, then through the supranational cooperation instituted by the European Coal and Steel Community. The volume takes into account internal factors and brings out the central importance of international relations, first with the decline in relations between France, Great Britain and the United States following the treaty of Versailles, and secondly with France's efforts to respond to the problem of energy security at the beginning of the Cold War.
