Originally published in 1972, the 16-volume Encyclopaedia has been updated with regularly issued Year Books and Decennials (in 1982 and 1992). Obviously, the CD-ROM format is a wondrous advance for such an important reference; and the splendid search capabilities and hyperlinking of the technology find perfect application here (no more going from volume to volume to find complete information on a topic). The CD-ROM edition includes the text of the original 1972 edition, as well as the update volumes and the Decennials. In addition, updates not available in any of the printed versions are included, accounting for major recent events, the State of Israel up to the 1996 elections, the Peace Process, major Jewish communities throughout the world, and key personalities. Beyond photographs, maps, and charts, the updated text has been enhanced with film clips, slide shows, and music. As we have come to expect from carefully prepared CD-ROMs today, installation and use are easy; graphics and multimedia features are of high quality (and include some 2,000 Hebrew pronunciations embedded in text); word processing and annotation features are complete; and search capabilities are multifaceted. The cost is $995 for a network of two to eight users, or $1,595 for nine or more users. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
