Review Text

In contrast to the harsh and complicated myths of the Aztecs, Carter offers a balanced sampling from Mayan and other Central American Indian cultures. The title story is one of several romantic origin tales, in which the moon, maize, the flute, etc., are explained in terms of magic, chiefs and princesses, and lovers united in death. In addition there are five myths from the Mayan Popol Vuh (also included in Cal Roy's The Serpent and the Sun, p. 1364, J-482), a smattering of humorous animal tales and a few diverting post-conquest stories dealing with supernatural encounters, ancient spells, or how the devil was tricked into building a church. The generally fluent style varies to suit the selections, which represent an easygoing mix of moods and genres. (Kirkus Reviews)
