Review Text

You'll hate yourself in the morning for enjoying this pop-glop about an American movie queen whose tinsel tiara turns to solid gold as wife of a Mideast ruler; but it's inventively busy, and there's enough quippy, smartsy bluster to keep it all moving through the squirmy sex and a nutty parade of familiar roman-a-clef media celebs. Flashbacks flicker on and off - as we wonder why Mary Anne Callahan, now Empress Marianna of Bahrait, has invited a disparate group of Americans to a celebration of her 15th wedding anniversary. Among the invitees: best friend Selma Shapiro, now fatso head of Hanover Studios, where Marianna's star first twinkled; the aunt and uncle who were shamed into taking in poverty-stricken Mary Anne by dear Father Flynn back in Charleston, Mass.; former leading man Doug Braden, who wanted everything but marriage; a failed director; Father Flynn himself, who arrives with a guilty secret; and Kissinger-ish former Secretary-of-State Calvin Gropper. Marianna's big secret news? Though now an Empress and mother of three, she's about to dump Ramir, her unfaithful Shah husband, and return to films! But then rat-a-tat-tat events - the death of the Shah, the kidnapping of a prince, dozens of dirty deals avenged, etc. - change Marianna's plans from sweet dreams of democracy to something much nastier and much more fun. A celebrity-slush fantasy plotted to the nines and a big, blowsy bonanza for easy, sleazy reading. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
