The love of God was put before her in its true light; the immense sacrifice made for her sins, came forcibly upon her; looking up, she beheld the Son of God fixed to the cross, bleeding, and in great agony; she saw multitudes around Him reviling and mocking; and turning to the sad spectacle, she saw an illustration of that great religious command--" Return good for evil;" for, lifting up his eyes to heaven, with his last voice Christ cried to his Father--" Forgive them, for they know not what they do!" Then came darkness, a mighty earthquake, and the earth shook and trembled, the veil was rent in twain, and the people were obliged to exclaim, --" Of a truth this was the Son of God!" Sarah Martin, in her imagination, and in the imprint of the Holy Word, saw all this scene vividly, and she was struck with a deep sense of her ingratitude, h, er want of love, her sinful life, and her own unworthiness. That sermon was the key by which she was enabled to enter heaven, and everlastingly hold communion with Him who had thus given himself as the price of her redemption. Her infidel friends, the lady and gentleman of whom we have made mention, told her that her new convictions were mere ravings of an excited imagination; that the thing was new, and would soon lose all hold of her mind. Thank God, they were wrong! and they have much to answer for in trying to decoy a young mind to the service of Satan and hell. She was now completely a child of God, devoted to His interests alone.
