Ely Culbertson (July 22, 1891 - December 27, 1955) was the most significant American Contract bridge personality. He played a major role in the early development of the game, and was widely regarded as "the man who made contract bridge." He was a great showman who became rich, was highly extravagant, and lost and gained fortunes several times over. His autobiography, The Strange Lives of One Man, is one of the most extraordinary ever written by a card-player. Culbertson was born in Poiana V rbil u in Romania to an American mining engineer, Almon Culbertson, and his Russian wife, Xenya Rogoznaya.
