Review Text

Pamela Sykes has written stories for very young readers - but this is for those on the other side of middle age, those who are apt to think of gin as "spirits" rather than booze, and it ali takes place on the occasion of Elizabeth Foster's simultaneous birthday-Silver Wedding Anniversary. Not too much to celebrate since her husband is dead and her children have their own lives they're not managing as well as they'd like to manage hers: Susan, querulous with the confinement of three children; pompous Hugh; and young Joanna trying to marry an unmarriageable type. They all come down from London to celebrate with her to fred that she has not only acquired a pantsuit but an attractive man, in fact a celebrity. No floral wickets to stick to - just a comfortable, domesticated story adjusting reality as it goes along. (Kirkus Reviews)
