Review Text

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the evilest of them all - is it Elizabeth who sees a woman called Frances instead of herself?, her small thirteen-year-old self who's already full-blown-and-grown after killing her parents? or her uncle James who keeps bedding her down in the attic? or her "tutor" Miss Barton who is an incarnation of an earlier witch? or her toad or her black cat? But then grandmother dies, and James disappears - "He could be snakebit" - while Elizabeth is gravid with another bad seed in the pod. About all that can be said for this - and saying anything takes some doing - is that it's silly and arch, not to mention writ in garter snakebit. (Kirkus Reviews)
