Description

This book explores the relations of Eliot and Joyce with certain antecedents (e.g. Dante, Flaubert, Baudelaire, Dostoyevsky), with certain contemporaries (e.g. Pound, Yeats) and with their readers. He writes, "My objective is to illuminate the authors' historic mutual - and to some extent joint - venture in English literature. It was part of an informal corporate enterprise. The enterprising company (in that sense of the word) included certain of their contemporaries working in all the arts, in all European countries and North and South America." Professor Sultan's aim is to provide knowledge on the contexts of modernism with acquaintance with the works of art themselves to provide a means for helping each illuminate the other. Readership: students of modern European literature.show more
