Review Text

Like Kotzwinkle's picture books, all of the tales here have child-sense and some quality of fantasy - whether he writes in the person of an elephant or a Russian woodcutter or a Chinese rag-boy, or spins (less effectively) psychedelic pipedreams. But there is something more, especially in his pieces about children and adolescents; he focuses on blurred boundaries which seems in a way like wonderful distortion but suggests at the same time a clearer vision than categorical adults can normally muster. Such diffusion is rarely an end in itself - and one doesn't mind when it is - but a context for sharp observations about the alt-of-a-piece pan-sexual world of the young and how they leave it. Entertainment is reason enough for reading since Kotzwinkle writes magically, and so much the better if the greatest surprise turns out to be your memory. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
