Excerpt: ...of the first galvanic telegraph, the inciter of a desire in Baron Schilling to be active in the field of telegraphy, the excellent man and philoso her, Privy Counsellor Soemmerring (born on the 28th January, 175%, in Prussia, at Thorn, the birthplace of Co rnicns) died at Frankfort on the 2nd March, 1820. lfllhen one studies the life and the labours of Samuel Thomas Soemmerring, it is impossible not to feel a high esteem for him. Not vanity, not eagerness or gain, but pure love of science, and the wish to be useful, were the motives of his incessant activity. Much has been published about his anatomical and various other scientific labours---even his observing durin the last ears of his life the dark spots on the sun has been notice --whilst his doings with regard to the telegraph have remained undescribed. Although his telegraph could never have served for any considerable distance, still it must be had in view, because it laid the foundation of that so eminently useful art, which his pupil, Baron Schilling, became the mediator to introduce. In the printed account of the public meeting of the Royal Bavarain Academy of Sciences, which took place on the 29th March, 1859, to celebrate its Jubilee, I was not a little astonished to find that in the oration made to recall to memory the merits and labours of defunct members of the Academ, nothing more was said of Soemmerring than: "He was one of the first who contrived a galvanic tele raph (Soemmerring war einer der Ersten, die einen galvanisehen '1'e%egraphen erdachten)."--'1'hcse are very few words, and even they are not correct.
