Invited by a Spanish university, Constantino Augusto de Moreas lands in Spain after a lifetime in Cuba, which ended in his scholarly research on the poet José Martí. Suddenly, he decides not to assist to the Congress in Zaragoza where he was invited and instead continue on the train to Barcelona. He is interested to know how to live in his idolized Europe, plus his desire of giving true meaning to his dull life, and regain old illusions, old loves that have been cast aside for the time and decency. Staying at a pension of Raval, intimate with the owner and gradually discovers that reality is harder than he suspected. Far from Havana and what was his world, only a ghostly image reappears in his memory: that of an old fellow in a sugar harvest, a classical dancer that promised in his youth, would end up acting with a famous company of Montecarlo Russian Ballet. Is the trip a flight, a final opportunity granted like the protagonist, an adjustment not decoded in the past, or the assumption of an end?

Invitado por una universidad española, Constantino Augusto de Moreas aterriza en España después de toda una vida en Cuba, enclaustrado en su investigación erudita sobre el poeta José Martí. De pronto, decide faltar al congreso al que está invitado en Zaragoza y proseguir en el tren hasta Barcelona. Al interés de conocer cómo se vive en su idolatrada Europa, Constantino une su afán de darle cierto sentido a su mortecina vida, y recobrar viejas ilusiones, viejos amores que han quedado arrumbados por el tiempo y el pudor. Se aloja en una pensión del Raval, intima con la dueña y, paulatinamente, descubre que la realidad es más dura de lo que sospechaba. Lejos de La Habana y de lo que fue su mundo, sólo una imagen fantasmagórica reaparece en sus recuerdos: la de un viejo compañero en una zafra azucarera, un bailarín clásico que le prometió, en su juventud, que acabaría actuando en una famosa compañía, los Ballets Rusos de Montecarlo. ¿Es el viaje una huida, una última oportunidad que quiere concederse el protagonista, un ajuste no descifrado de su pasado, o la asunción de su final?
