About Edgar Allan Poe

Edgar Allan Poe (1809 - 1849) was an author, poet, editor, and literary critic. His best-known works include the poem "The Raven" as well as many short stories, or "tales." Poe was a cadet at West Point, married his thirteen-year old cousin Virginia Clemm, and then died young under mysterious circumstances. Poe's father abandoned the family the year following Edgar's birth; his mother died the following year; finally, his wife Virginia died in 1847 at the age of twenty-four, two years prior to Edgar's death.show more
