The story of a woman's adultery. The story of Effi and the chinaman's ghost, the forest and dunes that are its setting, the stern Prussian code that makes the climax both terrible and absurd, are unique to Fontane and to German literature.show more

Review Text

Fontane is a novelist closely associated with Berlin, whose focus of interest is in individual characters, their interactions and the formal Prussian society of Berlin. His protagonists are subtly delineated and believable while the author remains admirably reticent and non-judgemental in portraying their weaknesses. These strengths are deployed fully in Effi Briest, his finest achievement. The theme of the individual becoming excluded from society by breaking the social code is similar to earlier books like Die Poggenpuhl (1896) but, this time, there is no redemption.
