Edward Green Balfour was a Scottish surgeon, orientalist and pioneering environmentalist in India best known for the Cyclopaedia of India several editions of which were published after 1857.Balfour was the second son of Captain George Balfour of the East India Company marine service and Susan Hume. His elder brother was Sir George Balfour. After studying at Montrose Academy he studied surgery at Edinburgh university and joined the Royal College of Surgeons in 1833. A family friend arranged a commission as an assistant surgeon in the Madras medical service in India and he set sail for India in 1834. On the way he visited Mauritius and witnessed ecological destruction about which Bernardin de Saint-Pierre had written. On arrival in India he was attached to a European regiment
