Review Text

The opening of this novel is gripping. An unidentified man is being tortured beyond bearing in order to make him answer questions. But as he does not have the knowledge his torturers seek, he cannot reply. Left for dead, the victim slowly recovers and determines to re-establish his identity by seeking out his enemies, and ascertaining the reason for his suffering. He is helped in his quest by the private investigator who inadvertently showed his torturers where to find him. The two of them, with the occasional assistance of an aggressive but righteous policeman, eventually trace the culprits, and discover not a monster, but another victim, this time of blackmail and kidnap. In an intricately plotted story, Jo Bannister explores the contemporary dilemmas of family life, psychological patterns of domination and resistance, and the process of moral reasoning. Unlikely heroes Daniel and Brodie are also unlikely lovers, and Bannister has the sense to avoid a romantic conclusion to a novel which nevertheless examines the nature of love. (Kirkus UK)
