Excerpt: ...of the day in Italy were the subject of a recent conference at Rome of representatives of the Italian Chambers of Commerce, including those of Trent, Trieste, Paris and London. The conference assumed special importance because of the presence of Dante Ferraris, Minister of Trade and Industry in the new government, who delivered the inaugural speech. He affirmed that it was not sufficient to bring production and distribution up to their pre-war level; they should both be increased to new heights, in order to re-establish quickly the country on a sound economic basis. He said further that every effort should be made to restore the balance of exports and imports, to place the national currency on a normal footing, and to reduce the cost of living. To these high ends His Excellency pledged the efforts of the Government. The Minister was of the opinion that the secret of reconstruction lay in the direction of exporting as much as possible and consuming as little as possible. Adopt Plans Foe Reconstruction After receiving this message from the Government, the representatives heard papers read by authorities on various phases of the commercial and industrial situation, and discussed informally how the business men of the country could best aid in the restoration of solid peace-time conditions. Following the discussion, the following resolutions were adopted: The Assembly of the Union of the Italian Chambers of Commerce, in confirmation of the orders of the day voted by the Third Congress of the Italian Chambers of Commerce Abroad, urges that such institutions be quickly put in position to carry out the high purposes of their mission, which consists essentially in the reanimation and defense of the national economy beyond the borders of the...show more
