Review Text

The fifth (out of six) and the best of Trollope's 'political novels', more recently but less appropriately known as the Palliser novels. The battleground here is in that area where love and property conduct their endless struggle under Trollope's benign but meticulous eye. Trollope is always very precise with his social topography, and his knowledge of the 1870s scene appears to hold secure from ducal seats to Parliament and from Newmarket to the Perthshire grouse moors. Review by Lord Jenkins of Hillhead, whose work includes 'The Chancellors' and 'A Life at the Centre' (Kirkus UK)show more
