Description

This landmark study provides the first comprehensive assessment of the nature and associations between the three main forms of social disadvantage in Australia: poverty, deprivation and social exclusion.
Drawing on the author's extensive research expertise and his links with welfare practitioners, it explains the limitations of existing approaches and presents new findings that build on the insights of disadvantaged Australians and views about the essentials of life, providing the basis for a new deprivation-based poverty measure.

The ideas and applications have lessons for all those involved in research on poverty and living standards." Jonathan Bradshaw, Professor of Social Policy, University of York "This book does an outstanding job of teasing out the relationships between low income, deprivation and social exclusion, analysed in an Australian context but with many lessons for anyone interested in identifying and addressing disadvantage." Brian Nolan, University College Dublin "This book represents a significant advance to poverty and exclusion research in Australia and internationally, it is essential reading for anyone interested in this rapidly changing field." David Gordon, University of Bristol "This book moves us beyond the study of poverty using conventional income
