Marting, the novel's heroine is a fifteen-year old girl nicknamed Ishi who, as is customary in her region of Peru, is about to experience the rite of passage from childhood to adulthood. The apple of her father's eye and an only child, Dona Isidora's parents have chosen a young, talented man for her to marry, but she has secretly fallen in love with a dashing young Spaniard who has just arrived in town.
