Review Text

"An Excursion into Autobiography" presents some attractively ambient divagations as Brooke travels from England, to Switzerland, Sicily, Greece in the present, returns in memory to the past, in an associative recall of places, persons, and transient incidents. An apprehensive traveller, he is always responsive to the "magical potency" of Abroad, but there are the indispositions and discomforts as well; with him you will take tea with the Mafia in Sicily, linger in a church- or a cafe, share the companionship of many writers and the critical insights they provoke. The disconsolate phrase "Month's Mind" haunts him through the years, and the portrait of his great great aunt, a bad-tempered terror, leads him back and on to The Dog at Clambercrown, a local pub.... A fugitive form of reminiscence, and often disarmingly clever, this has a very special appeal at an aesthetic-intellectual level. (Kirkus Reviews)
