Review Text

Seventeen brief, appealing poems, ten of them published here for the first time. The poets are familiar and contemporary (Worth, Yolen, Kennedy, Ciardi); the dogs all shapes, sizes, and ages - from a "Newborn Puppy" to the companion mourned in the last line of Livingston's own poem: "But now he's gone. He died. He's dead." Morrill's agile, affectionate drawings capture them in a pleasing variety of poses. Neither verse nor illustration has quite the appeal or quality of the companion volume (Cat Poems, 1987, illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman); nonetheless, an attractive collection.
