Fall under the spell of Diana and Matthew in the stunning first volume of the No.1 internationally bestsellling ALL SOULS trilogy. A world of witches, daemons and vampires. A manuscript which holds the secrets of their past and the key to their future. Diana and Matthew - the forbidden love at the heart of it. When historian Diana Bishop opens an alchemical manuscript in the Bodleian Library, it's an unwelcome intrusion of magic into her carefully ordered life. Though Diana is a witch of impeccable lineage, the violent death of her parents while she was still a child convinced her that human fear is more potent than any witchcraft. Now Diana has unwittingly exposed herself to a world she's kept at bay for years; one of powerful witches, creative, destructive daemons and long-lived vampires. Sensing the significance of Diana's discovery, the creatures gather in Oxford, among them the enigmatic Matthew Clairmont, a vampire genticist. Diana is inexplicably drawn to Matthew and, in a shadowy world of half-truths and old enmities, ties herself to him without fully understanding the ancient line they are crossing. As they begin to unlock the secrets of the manuscript and their feelings for each other deepen, so the fragile balance of peace unravels...show more

Also published in <a href="http://cupofcoffeeandabook.blogspot.pt/2012/02/review-discovery-of-witches.html"><b>"A Cup of Coffee and a Book"</b></a> <b>*This review might contain some spoilers!*</b> This was one of the most amazing books I've read in 2011. Despite being a little bit tired of vampires and all, <a href="http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/3849415.Deborah_Harkness">Deborah Harkness</a> managed to give us a fantastic book with a beautiful love story between a vampire and a witch. The book was easy to read despite its length. As soon as you start it, it's almost impossible to stop and we find ourselves already connected to the characters and wanting to know more about them. As the plot unfolds before us, we are soon draw to the amazing world Harkness created and it's not easy to let it go. Diana Bishop was, in my opinion, a weak character at the beginning but I admit changing my opinion as I kept reading the book. At the end of the last chapter, I've seen that she was indeed a strong woman with a very determined mind. I would freak out with the amount of things that she's been through but she kept her head held high and didn't stop fighting. As for Matthew Clairmont, well, he's my favourite character since I've always had a thing for the male main character. He's a vampire (making me wishing, again, for my own) but with a strong and great heart. One of the things I've appreciated while reading this was that he was already in love with her before she realised that she too was in love. This story made my skin crawl with anxiety and anticipation. And when that happens to me, it means that I'm really into the story and that I'm loving it. If I feel what the character is feeling and have a strange coldness on my stomach, you can be sure that the author became one of my favourites. Now, all I can ask for desperately is for book two. 2012 is too far away now.show more
