Description

Excerpt from Discourses Delivered by Appointment, Before the Cincinnati Medical Library Association, January 9th and 10th, 1852 When I accepted the invitation Of our en terprising executive committee to deliver a public discourse on the Opening of our Reading Rooms, I thought of nothing more than a brief inquiry into the origin, progress and influence of the periodical literature of our profession. Obscuring or destroy ing every present Object, they involved me in an intellectual mirage, as bewildering as the Opti cal which meets the traveler, on his journey over our great plains to the Rocky Mountains. To employ another illustration, 1 was in the condition of a geologist examining a cabinet, in which the organic remains of ancient and modern seas, are arranged according to some.
