When a naked body is washed up on the rocks in Port Victoria, Mendi Mkhize, former freedom fighter now diminished to magistrate, is sent to investigate. He finds himself amongst an untame cast of mavericks - Dom Marais, enigmatic custodian of southern Africa's finest marijuana crop; Bob Peace, late-night deejay on the ineptly named Radio Freedom; and Breakdown, the vagrant who confuses everything by admitting to the murder. But none of this concerns Alice Burley, who has come from London to pick up the trail of a tragedy buried in her family's past which is linked to the forces which have shaped this country.
