You'd expect another book about dinosaurs to be a new breed, in some way different from or superior to its precursors, but this is neither distinctively angled nor especially effective. A brief survey of the origin, varieties and disappearance of dinosaurs, it combines a determinedly instructive, often interlocutory text, young in style and tone, with black-and-white illustrations (photographs, drawings, diagrams) that are adequate for identification but won't awe anyone. Moreover, the "monster" image is lost without a corresponding gain in scholarship: explanations (of the evolution from amphibians to reptiles, of the characteristics of different groups of dinosaurs) are fragmentary and often superficial. It's the last book most youngsters would choose from a wide assortment and there's no reason why they should. (Kirkus Reviews)
