Its existence in Persian, except as a substitute for dal, q. v., appears very doubtful, nor does it exist in the Sanskrit and Indian dialects thence derived: it is pronounced by the Arabs like th in the English word thou; but in Hindustani its sound is not to be distinguished from that of ze, which is exactly our own letter as.
