Instead, this book explores a dark theme such as abuse and living with someone who suffers from the mental illness. The story revolves around Risa Akagi, a 16-year old female protagonist who lives in Hakone, Kanagawa prefecture, Japan. Risa had lost her mother when she was only 11 due to the illness she had before Risa was born. 3 years after her mother's death, her father remarried to a woman named Riko. Riko has a daughter named Chiyu from her previous marriage. Both Chiyu and Risa get along very well even though they're not related by blood. As for Riko, she loves Risa as much as she loves Chiyu. Everything seems normal until one day, Riko starts to act weird while Risa's father was transferred to Nagasaki temporarily to solve murder case there. Ever since that day, Riko always abusing them and accusing them of being the messenger of the Lord of the Dead. Despite being abused frequently, Risa and Chiyu had never told anyone about the abuse because they're worried that Riko will become more violent to them and they're confused with Riko's sudden change. The abuse continues until Risa enters high school and Chiyu is in her final year in high school. Without realizing, their destiny is about to change when Riko suddenly decides to kill them. Will they be able to break free from Riko's cycle of abuse and change their life for better?
