Excerpt: ...confound my faith i Thou art, in this sanctuary, O my divine Saviour, an all-powerful God, and the creator of heaven and earth; and Thy divinity, as well as Thy glorious attributes, are hidden under the most ordinary species, and an exterior which has no splendour. Yes, Lord, Thou art the creator of angels and men, and of all that subsists in this vast universe; and by a marvel of humility Thou art become in one sense a creature who dost voluntarily practise a ready and willing obedience in submitting Thyself to a priest, who is but a creature which Thou hast formed with Thy hands; and Thou dost obey him with as much readiness as if he were himself Thy God. Thou art in this sacrament as the Saviour of all men, and Thou dost reiterate on their behalf all that Thou didst on Calvary, in order to redeem them from hell, and to open to them the gates of heaven; and yet many of them insult Thee in It with contempt: they profane the Body, the Blood with which they have been redeemed. O what humiliation! What excess of patience and goodness is it that Thou dost not punish these outrages, and that Thou dost still await the penitence of these profaners! Thou art therein, Lord, as a sovereign Priest, offering unceasingly to Thy Heavenly Father a Sacrifice of a sweet smelling savour for our reconciliation; but I see all the glory of Thy priesthood obscured by the character of Victim, which Thou takest at the hands of Thine own victims, who here take Thy place, and become Thine offering priests.
