A devil's bargain

Easily the shyest Wallflower, Evangeline Jenner stands to become the wealthiest, once her inheritance comes due. Because she must first escape the clutches of her unscrupulous relatives, Evie has approached the rake Viscount St. Vincent with a most outrageous proposition: marriage!

Sebastian's reputation is so dangerous that thirty seconds alone with him will ruin any maiden's good name. Still, this bewitching chit appeared, unchaperoned, on his doorstep to offer her hand. Certainly an aristocrat with a fine eye for beauty could do far worse.

But Evie's proposal comes with a condition: no lovemaking after their wedding night. She willnever become just another of the dashing libertine's callously discarded broken hearts -- which means Sebastian will simply have to work harder at his seductions...or perhaps surrender his own heart for the very first time in the name of true love.

"I'm Sebastian, Lord St. Vincent. I can't be celibate. Everyone knows that."

Desperate to escape her scheming relatives, Evangeline Jenner has sought the help of the most infamous scoundrel in London.

A marriage of convenience is the only solution.

No one would have ever paired the shy, stammering wallflower with the sinfully handsome viscount. It quickly becomes clear, however, that Evie is a woman of hidden strength--and Sebastian desires her more than any woman he's ever known.

Determined to win her husband's elusive heart, Evie dares to strike a bargain with the devil: If Sebastian can stay celibate for three months, she will allow him into her bed.

When Evie is threatened by a vengeful enemy from the past, Sebastian vows to do whatever it takes to protect his wife . . . even at the expense of his own life.

Together they will defy their perilous fate, for the sake of all-consuming love.

Our customer reviews

She's a shy, timid and high spirited wallflower...he was super confident, loud mouthed, handsome for his own good rake. He was nothing she wants and she was ...well the last one he was ever want to be on earth. The odd pair. But they were united by desperation, one wants the safe harbor of protection and the other got that money sign displaying through his eyes. A mismatch from hell at first.... Death has united them into something they both didn't understand at first, words merely a way to express what they felt for each other. But action had show it all and even more. Miss Kleypas make sure finally Sebastian and Evie succumb to their attraction to each other. After went through rough obstacles road into a smooth quiet intimate way only the two understand. I follow their story from the fourth wallflower Daisy to Hannah and I am still longing for their more

This books, along with Seduce me at Sunrise, is my favourite Kleypas. There is something about a man who shows the woman he loves her in every way physically possible, but can never utter those three words - should be frustrating, but instead makes for a sweet tale. Evangeline Jenner is painfully shy, yet she finds enough courage to escape the oppression of her family and makes a shocking proposition to Sebastian, Viscount St. Vincent: a rake, a rouge and a scoundrel. Broke, he agrees. Yet once they return to normality, after their mad dash to Gretna, he realises just how pervasive Evie has become in his life. But of course it takes him a while to realise, and even longer to tell her, whilst poor Evie suffers thinking she means nothing. Perhaps a premise that has been done a few times, but really, does anyone do it better than Klepyas? Highly more

One of must-read-before-you-die book! ;) Love the hero and heroine here, great pair! They never imagine that it'd so perfect when they have each other. The guy is former rake, and the heroine is a shy-quite girl, who difficult to speak normally. ^^show more

For info: The order that the books are written in is: Secrets of a Summer Night . It Happened One Autumn . Devil in Winter . Scandal in Spring . I would recommend reading them in order. I love this book and after reading (book two - It Happened One Autumn) I couldnt wait to read the rakes Sebastian St Vincents story and was wondering how was LK going to redeem him. Well redeem him she did into one of the best male characters she has written. This is his and Evies story, and while she is shy and reclusive with a stammer he is a charming manipulative rake that cares only for himself. Evie is the daughter of Jenner (who is dying)and owns the biggest gaming club in London. Evie proposes to St Vincent (who is broke)to escape her cruel family an exchange for her inheritance. She knows he is a scoundrel after kidnapping her best friend but he is her only way to freedom. The chemistry between the characters is sizzling and the book is gripping as Evie finds her strenght and St Vincent his caring side with fun and adventure thrown in. BUY NOWshow more
