I saw her safely into her boat, handed her her painting materials and then bade her "good-bye." A few moments later I was in my own boat, on my way back to my house. Little did I dream when I left it that morning what a surprise was in store for me, or what an important bearing it was to have on my future. I trust I have had too much experience to fall an immediate victim to a woman's pretty face, but there was something about Miss Valentia, both in her face and manner, that was unusually attractive. It is possible that she may have been acting, but it seemed to me that she was quite unconscious what a beautiful woman she really was. Her manner was frank and natural, and when she had admitted you to her friendship, you felt that it was a privilege not to be taken lightly. I made up my mind that I would certainly call upon them and at no distant date. The following evening was the night of full moon, and a beautiful night it certainly was. What made me think of such a thing I cannot say, but the fact remains that, when I had dined, I determined to go for a stroll, and that that stroll should be in the direction of the small village of Carraghford, the whereabouts of which I had learnt, with much supplementary information, from my cook.
