In the winter of 1840, a young Englishman named Edward Eyre led the first South Australian-funded expedition party north from the newly-settled town of Adelaide to discover what lay in the "unpenetrated, mysterious and unknown" centre of Australia. Eyre was not yet 25 years old, yet had experienced Australian frontier life on his own land and by overlanding stock, earning respect as an enterprising, courageous leader. However, his courage and stamina were brought to the fore when his northward route became impassable. He refused to return to Adelaide, and instead he turned his expedition round, leading his party west through the most unrelenting landscape, undertaking what many people consider to be one of the greatest and most courageous expeditions in Australian history - the search for a northerly route beginning from the west. The result was the exploration of Australia's southern coast - the desert coast. The historic journey is recreated here, in a series of photographs and extracts from Edward Eyre's journals, plus explanatory text from Edward Stokes.
