Derek Jarman (1942-1994) was best known as an author of such films as "Sebastiane", "Jubilee", "Caravaggio", "Edward II", "The Tempest", "The Garden", "Blue" and "Wittgenstein". In 1984 the ICA mounted a retrospective and in 1986 he was short-listed for the Turner Prize at the Tate Gallery. In addition he was also a stage and screen designer, a writer and a poet, a serious plantsman, gardener and garden designer. For much of his life, he was an active gay rights campaigner particularly with regard to HIV and AIDS, from which he suffered and eventually died from.
