Every reader will agree that I could do no better than to publish the above letter, with its striking facts. Perhaps many other readers can duplicate the facts. About the same time the following information fell into my hands: A postscript to a letter written by a physician to a prominent pharmaceutical house in this city reads as follows: "You will please pay express at your end again and charge same to me, as I find it to be a saving of nearly half to me." A certain publishing company has taken a great interest in the! present political campaign, and distributed much literature, mostly by mail; but a certain speech could be better sent by express in lots of 1,000 at the ordinary rates, and on this basis they advertised extensively and got a great many orders. Later they wrote as follows to a patron: "Since the express companies have combined against us and raised the rates, we will probably lose some money, but will fill all orders." Comment on the above seems hardly necessary. It must be apparent to all that a function so important as public carrying should be under the strictest law to insure uniformity and justice to all; but such a function should be done like the mail service, by the government, at cost, not for private profit or for public profit, but for the service of the public. As the Doctor asks that I "air" this matter, I have made some inquiries, but have not had time to make the thorough investigation that I would like. I find that express companies are not public corporations, accountable to the public; but rather, they may be called "partnerships." However, I think there is one exception to this.
