Wow, this was one excellent dark and edgy read. Anne Stuart has always been the queen of the dark, gamma, 'anti-hero'; but this time she has outdone herself.
I liked the first book, Raziel; but I loved this one. This story takes all the promise of the first book of the series, throws it into high gear, and moves the storyline of the series along very nicely. It's exciting, intelligent, fast-paced, and very well written. This book really lets Kristina Douglas/Anne Stuart's excellent storytelling and writing capabilities show through. With this one, much more than the first book, you know you are reading Anne Stuart. Nobody does the dark, tortured hero better.
The story takes place 7 years after the end of Raziel and the death of Azazel's mate Sarah. He is hunting for the demon Lilith, and finds her residing in the body of the human, Rachel. There are no limits as to what he will do to protect the other Fallen Angels from the evil prophecy and destruction Lilith will bring to him and his brethren, even if it means the torture and death of her human host Rachel. When he is forced to give her up due to being tricked, he comes to realize how much he cares for Rachel; and then there are no limits as to what he will do to save her, whether she's the demon Lilith or not.
Anyone who is familiar with Stuart's other work knows what an edgy dynamic she has to her heroes and to her stories. She starts with an ice cold gamma hero; and through the course of the story, and the love of a good woman, they turn their lives around and are redeemed. Her books are for the adult and not the faint-hearted or simpering miss. If you've never read her before, you are in for a real treat. And, of course, it's a great story.
I can't wait for the next book, about Michael. A fallen angel who is a bald, tattooed warrior and unrepentant bad boy. What's not to love?show more
