This text sets contemporary democratic theory in its proper context, tracing the roots of debates in classical ideas. The focus is on challenges which democrats face in seeking to defend democracy. The key theme of the text is the development of the various philosophical foundations for democracy which have been advanced, i.e. the main focus is on the theory of democracy, although this will be grounded in an exploration of democratic institutions. This focus gives a coherence to the book as a whole, highlighting continuity and discontinuity between classical, modern and postmodern understandings of democracy. The book introduces the concept of democracy by focusing on contemporary democratic theory (rather than taking a historical or institutional focus) and by asking what the philosophical (rather than institutional) foundations of democracy might be.
