Review Text

Eight visions from beyond our solar system where the science fiction writer's imagination is unhampered by the limitations of mundane scientific certainties. None of these stories are new (five of the eight were written before 1960), but there's a fair balance between those which depend on logical conundrums and surprise endings (like Gordon Dickson's verbal hat trick "Lulungomeena" and Harlan Ellison's last minute escape from a booby-trapped "Life Hatch") and poetic evocations of worlds totally unlike our own in Jack Vance's "Noise," Damon Knight's "Ticket to Anywhere" and, notably, Terry Cart's eerie "Dance of the Changer and the Three." Van Vogt's "Far Centaurus," in which cryogenically frozen space travelers thaw to find that the next generation has beaten them to their destination, Chad Oliver's anthropological thriller "Blood's A Rover," and Silverberg's own "The Sixth Palace" - which poses an extra-stellar sphinxian riddle, round out an entertaining, but certainly not innovative, tour of the outer regions of space.
