Review Text

A Redi-whip historical novel in which the heroine, a randy Nancy Drew called Deborah, rises from the rags of a by-blow childhood through spying for Queen Elizabeth to wealth, title and reunion with her lusty lover, Lord Christopher Belstone. At a ripe seventeen she carries warning letters to Mary of Scotland from cousin Bess, is tripped up on route, trapped and finally rescued by a group of pleasant Papists (including poor Babington). But for dessert she is handsomely deflowered by Lord Belstone. Back in Whitehall she is rewarded for her espionage with marriage to a Count, whose horrid practices drive her to another lover. The latter and the Count are fortuitously killed, leaving Deborah free for a realliance with Lord Belstone and another little errand for the Queen. . . "What part would she have to play in the chaos that loomed ahead?" We'll soon know for, alack, there's sure to be more. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
