In about 90 per cent of the cases, the word ' loi ' is used as the French equivalent of the English ' Act, ' but in about 10 per cent of the cases the word ' acte' is used. I looked over the index very carefully to see if there was a scientific or systematic distinction, but I did not find any. The word 'acte' is used in relation to both public and private Bills, and so is the word ' loi.' Either one or other must be the proper word, and I should think there was no necessity of creating differences of this character. Sir WILFRID LAURIER. The reason is that one translator prefers one word, while another prefers the other word. I have had one or two quarrels with the translators who insisted on introducing new words which had not been received in this country. For instance, there was the case of the criminal code. One of the translators wanted to translate it 'Code Penal.' I objected, and wanted him to use ' Code Crimlnel.' He said that this was not French. I went to the library and showed him 'L'Ordlnance Criminelle.' The fact is, some of these translators are a little fastidious in their ways. and they do not agree. I cordially agree that it would be better to have uniformity. But my hon. friend (.Ir. Bergeron) will agree with me that there are some names that cannot be translated..Ir. BERGERON. That applies more to translating from French into English than from English into French. Sir WILFRID LAURIER. But it applies both ways.
