Review Text

Imagine being blind, confined to a wheelchair and having movement only in one finger. Then invent a scenario where a small girl confides in you that she knows the identity of the person responsible for the recent murder of several small boys. She calls the murderer 'Death from the Woods' and warns you that you too are in danger. Some nightmare; and yet Aubert manages to make her paralysed heroine the perfectly credible narrator and centre of a remarkable crime novel. Elise can neither speak nor ask questions, only raise a finger to mean yes, but she notes any change in atmosphere, analyses the tiniest sound and listens avidly to conversations and news broadcasts. The suspense becomes almost unbearable as Elise's lack of autonomy and her dangerous knowledge leave her more and more frustrated, vulnerable and unprotected. What's the sense in yelling 'He's behind you', if the victim can't move? Some vile sensational effects and an over-elaborate denouement could have turned this into a melodramatic horror story but the running commentary of Elise's tough, funny sarcastic thoughts lift it into another dimension entirely. Aubert, who was awarded the Grand Prix de la Litterature Policiere for this thriller, is an original. (Kirkus UK)
