Review Text

Another case painstakingly investigated by Detective Inspector Tom Pollard and Sergeant Toye (The Wheel Turns). Elderly "old girl" (alumnus) Beatrice Baynes, a tradition-bound troublemaker, is found murdered at the end of the annual Old Girls' Reunion weekend at Meldon School for Girls. Pollard and Toye carefully explore family motives and local personnel - from feckless nephew George and spineless god-daughter Madge to the school's progressive headmistress Helen Renshaw and war-scarred caretaker Bert Heyward. But teacher Ann Cartwell and her suave mentor Clive Torrance gradually emerge as the prime suspects - with Pollard's intuitive wife Jane providing a key to the motive. Early (1967), lesser Lemarchand - with tedious time-tabling, endless rumination, and a lively solution that arrives much too late to save the day. (Kirkus Reviews)
