Review Text

If you're one of the readers who resisted Hawes' A White Merc With Fins and Rancid Aluminium (soon to be filmed) despite all the brouhaha, now's the time for you to catch up with this inventive and funny British novelist. All the dazzling wordplay and deliriously inventive plotting that distinguished his first books is developed here in a beautifully constructed novel. Starting in a deceptively low key, Hawes introduces us to a group of people who meet on the same night once a year. They have an arrangement: all they carry is a toothbrush, some cash (and, of course, credit cards) and are primed for adventure - they have no idea where they'll end up that evening. And it could be anywhere in the world. The organizer is Harry - the man with the plan. But what begins as an antic adventure for several deluded protagonists ends up in a manner that is both hilarious and disturbing. Manic plotting and sardonic dialogue bring these characters vividly to life. (Kirkus UK)show more
