"The Great Scholar, in chariot of ivory, Pulled by the two finest white stallions, Raised his spear while his men roared, the captains In chariots lifting their spears in salute, Those on foot raising their shields and sharpened swords." Welcome to the brutal world of politics! "David and the Sword of Damocles" tells the story of the 2015 UK General Election in the style of an epic, Homer-like poem. Two great armies - one led by godlike David, the other by swift-minded Edward - are locked in a struggle for power, with three other armies all striving to influence the outcome. The five armies, each with their own histories and agendas, come together to fight a titanic final battle to determine who will lead the land. The poem describes some of the fascinating twists and turns of the election, when five political parties had a hand in the outcome for the first - and possibly the last - time in history, and where the result was uncertain right up to the time the polls closed and the votes were counted. It brings in many of the characters involved in the election, including election strategists and the media. And it recreates the heroic grandeur of epic poems, complete with scheming Greek gods and stylised battle scenes.show more
