David John Sainsbury, Baron Sainsbury of Turville, FRS, is a British businessman and politician. From 1992 to 1997, he served as the Chairman of Sainsbury's. He was made a life peer in 1997, and currently sits in the House of Lords as a member of the Labour Party. He served in the government as the Minister for Science and Innovation from 1998 and 2006. On 16 October 2011, he was elected the Chancellor of the University of Cambridge. He is the son of Sir Robert Sainsbury and Lisa Sainsbury. His elder sister was Elizabeth and his younger sisters are Celia and Annabel. He is the nephew of Lord Sainsbury. His cousins are the Conservative peer Lord Sainsbury of Preston Candover, Simon Sainsbury, and former Tory MP Sir Tim Sainsbury. His great-grandparents, John James Sainsbury and Mary Ann Staples, established a grocer's at 173 Drury Lane in 1869 which became the British supermarket chain Sainsbury's.show more
