Description

When sixteen-year-old Amanda Verner's family decides to move from their small mountain cabin to the vast prairie, she hopes it is her chance for a fresh start. She can leave behind the memory of the past winter; of her sickly ma giving birth to a baby sister who cries endlessly; of the terrifying visions she saw as her sanity began to slip, the victim of cabin fever; and most of all, the memories of the boy she has been secretly meeting with as a distraction from her pain. The boy whose baby she now carries. When the Verners arrive at their new home, a large cabin abandoned by its previous owners, they discover the inside covered in blood. And as the days pass, it is obvious to Amanda that something isn't right on the prairie. She's heard stories of lands being tainted by evil, of men losing their minds and killing their families, and there is something strange about the doctor and his son who live in the woods on the edge of the prairie. But with the guilt and shame of her sins weighing on her, Amanda can't be sure if the true evil lies in the land, or deep within her soul.

Review quote

"Imagine Stephen King writing Little House on the Prairie and you'll get the chilling, mind-bending horrors of Amy Lukavics's haunting and powerful debut novel. Daughters Unto Devils broke my heart to pieces and terrified me-exactly what I crave in a ghost tale." -Cat Winters, Morris Award Finalist for In the Shadow of Blackbirds"Dark, dangerous, and creepily atmospheric, Daughters Unto Devils will haunt you long after you've read the last page. This is classic horror at its best" -Gretchen McNeil, author of Ten and the "Don't Get Mad" series"Amy Lukavics brings serious game to the horror genre with her debut novel Daughters unto Devils. Deeply disturbing, truly riveting and highly recommended." -Jonathan Maberry, New York Times bestselling author of Rot & Ruin and The Nightsiders"Daughters unto Devils is basically Little Hell House on the Prairie, a great look at how tough our pioneer forefathers had it with all the carnivorous ants, man-eating pigs, lonesome winters, and ancient forces of unthinkable evil they had to deal with." -Grady Hendrix, author of Horrorstor: a Novel"This is nightmare on the prairie, and on the mountain, and in the woods, and pretty much everywhere in between...best read late at night in a tent with a trusted friend nearby." -Kirkus"There is no happy ending here, and horror and spine-tingler readers, YA and adult alike, will relish Lukavics's tale right down to the last terrifying page." -School Library Journal"A creepy read that mashes Laura Ingalls Wilder's prairie purity with Stephen King's most frightful horror. It will lull you into the perceived simplicity of a bygone time and present ghastly images that will linger long after the last page. Be prepared to experience collywobbles and goose bumps during this debut novel. Perfect for Halloween or late-night reading." -Booklist"If you are looking for something terrifying this Halloween, Daughters Unto Devils is a good bet. With atmosphere and horror to spare, the story of Amanda's family is an unforgettable one." -RT Book Reviews
