Review Text

Michael Connelly's main series hero is Los Angeles police detective Harry (Hieronymous) Bosch, although a second protagonist, former FBI serial-killer profiler Terry McCaleb, has featured in at least two novels to date. It's a good trick if you can bring your two heroes together and in A Darkness More Than Night, Connelly does just that, pulling it off brilliantly. The retired McCaleb (retired because he has had a heart transplant) agrees to look at a 'cold case' where the local cops are getting nowhere. Spookily, the scene of the crime suggests an almost ritual killing of a suspected murderer, drawing inspiration from the paintings of Hieronymous Bosch. And guess who emerges as the prime suspect? Now Bosch himself is involved in a very public court case where a big shot Hollywood film director is on trial for murder and the prosecution case rests heavily, almost exclusively, on his testimony. So what does McCaleb do? Pursue his case, risking Bosch's credibility and perhaps letting a murderer go free or keep quiet, letting Bosch go free, given that he might have taken the law into his own hands himself? The big moral question is avoided, or at least postponed, when Bosch finds out that McCaleb is unofficially investigating him and in a great plot twist, Bosch hires McCaleb to work for him to clear his name. In court room scenes, in background forensic work and in routine police procedures, Connelly knows his stuff, probably better than any other crime writer working today, and here he is writing at the height of his powers.
