Description

Paige Kelly is used to weird--in fact, she probably corners the market on weird, considering that her best friend, Dottie, has been dead since the 1950s. But when a fire demon attacks Paige in detention, she has to admit that things have gotten out of her league. Luckily, the cute new boy in school, Logan Bradley, is a practiced demonslayer--and he isn't fazed by Paige's propensity to chat with the dead. Suddenly, Paige is smack in the middle of a centuries-old battle between warlocks and demons, learning to fight with a magic sword so that she can defend herself. And if she makes one wrong move, she'll be pulled into the Dark World, an alternate version of our world that's overrun by demons--and she might never make it home.

Review quote

"The Dark World has it all: a chilling tale of demons and their slayers, a smart and feisty heroine, and an irresistible love story. You won't be able to put it down!" -Aimee Agresti, author of Illuminate "A sweet romance with a quick sense of humor and supernatural action." -Kirkus Reviews "Shultz's series starter is a charming paranormal romance, cleverly written with witty dialogue and nonstop action. And the cliff-hanger ending perfectly positions the next installment." -Booklist "A page-turning romance....Paige's wry humor, sarcastic voice, and determination to defend herself make her a likable main character for fans of paranormal romances." -School Library Journal

Our customer reviews

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Harlequin TEEN and NetGalley.) 16-year-old Paige can see and talk to ghosts, something that has led to her being bullied at school. When she is then attacked by a demon, and has to save a demon hunter from being killed, Paige is about to find out that there is much more to her than talking to ghosts. Why can Paige talk to ghosts? And why are there demons after her? This was an okay story, but I did lose interest at the end. Paige was a good main character, and I liked how she wasn’t afraid to be herself. She stuck up for herself against the popular girls, and even tried to protect people who weren’t necessarily her friend, just because she thought they needed help. I also liked the way she referred to Dotty as her best friend, even though she was a ghost. I liked the storyline in this, and I really liked it up to the 60% mark. I liked that the story was believable, and that Paige didn’t immediately believe what she was told. There were a few twists and surprises, and on the whole this was an enjoyable story. There was some romance, and I liked how Paige didn’t immediately fall all over Logan. The ending was okay, although it did end with a huge cliff-hanger, for some reason the second half of this book just didn’t hold my interest the way the first half did. Overall; okay story, but the first half was better than the second half. 6.5 out of 10.show more
