Review Text

A story of superstition and sorcery in the small village of St. Jacques high in the French Maritime Alps casts its own spell, and cuts the drama of hypnotic fear and heightening hysteria with the young romance of Juliet- and Michael. For Juliet, who has known neither a home nor the world, is left at the inn by her father- an actor reluctant to assume responsibilities- and there in the service of Rene and Martine Loubier, who runs the inn, she finds a place of her own. But Martine, who is pregnant, is particularly susceptible to the danger of one-eyed, evil-eyed, Terka, a Romany gypsy. Their goat dies mysteriously; the cure, who casts her out of his church, meets with an inexplicable accident; and Martine is sure that her baby will die and succumbs to the paralysis of fear until Rene shoots Terka, and is brought to trial. It is Juliet, and Michael, with the cure's testimony, who help to secure his freedom- and for Juliet- there's the new security of her future with Michael... A romantic drama which takes much of its charm from its surroundings, this is more decorative than devious and a soft-colored entertainment for women. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
